These systems work by using a ground-source heat pump to extract heat from the building and transfer it to the ground, where it is dissipated. The heat pump consists of a loop of refrigerant that is buried underground, typically in a horizontal configuration, although it can also be installed vertically. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the building and carries it to the ground, where it is dissipated. The cooled refrigerant is then returned to the building to repeat the process. Geothermal cooling systems are efficient and environmentally friendly because they use the earth's natural heat sink to cool buildings, rather than relying on electricity or fossil fuels to produce artificial cooling. They are also relatively easy to maintain because the underground loop is protected from the elements and is not subject to wear and tear. However, geothermal cooling systems do require a significant upfront investment for installation, as the underground loop must be installed and the heat pump must be sized and configured properly.
